Marfa. West, Texas.
Marfa Texas. A place that was always on my radar, but I never wanted to make the 6.5 hour drive from Austin. Was it worth it? YES. A thousand times yes. A sleepy town full of artists, it has all the charm, and quietness that you want on a weekend getaway. Here’s our weekend itinerary, and I feel we got the most out of our trip:
First Night, stay at Thunderbird Hotel. It’s charming, has a great pool, comfy room, and it’s a short drive to the heart of downtown Marfa.
Drive into Alpine (26 miles) and do a hike. We were trying to find The Famous “Desk” on Hancock Hill, but in my opinion God had other plans and we found a cross up on a hill. It was THE coolest.
Stop in Hotel Paisano. Opening in 1930, it was the location headquarters for the cast and crew of Giant. You feel like you’ve stepped back in time walking into the lobby, and it has alllllll the old Texas charm.
Have a drink and tacos at The Sentinel. Home to The Big Bend Sentinel Newspaper, they serve coffee, drinks and food out of the kitchen in the back. The perfect spot to munch on some snacks in a cozy backyard atmosphere.
Drive to the world Famous Prada Marfa. 26 miles northwest of Marfa, its located in Valentine, Texas. Built by a couple of Scandinavian artists, Prada Marfa is a “pop architectural land art project”. It was packed at sunset, but it was worth it.
Marfa Lights. I don’t know if we got there at the wrong time, but we sadly missed them. The Marfa Lights appear randomly during the night, regardless of season or weather. The official viewing area is located 9 miles east of town driving towards Alpine.
Drive the Davis Mountain Loop. This is the drive to witness that beautiful and peaceful West Texas Landscape. Its the highest public highway in Texas, and about an hour and half drive.
Stay a night at El Cosmico. Trust me, you do NOT want to miss this. We booked a last minute stay in a tent. This was my favorite thing we did. Sitting outside your tent at night on its small porch, star gazing at THE most star-filled sky I’ve ever seen, was incredible. Hot during the day, it got down to 55 degrees at night. But the beds heated…and comfy. We never wanted to leave.
With Leon Bridge’s ‘Texas Sun’ playing on the radio as we exited Marfa. The words of the song singing true to the weekend we just had:
You say you like the wind blowing through your hair
Come on, roll with me 'til the sun goes down
Texas sun
Say you wanna hit the highway while the engine roars
Well, come on, roll with me 'til the sun goes down
That Texas sun, oh yeah
That Texas sun.
